discovering new solutions
For this project, the Children’s Discovery Museum of San Jose approached us to create something for their outdoor amphitheater. The main idea was to design social seating that matches the museum’s aesthetic and budget.
After some time observing and surveying patrons, however, the research showed that by the time teachers, parents, and children went to eat, they wanted to relax. Indeed, over-stimulation can backfire and cause children and adults alike to become disinterested in the venue.
finding versatility
The final product is a twist on a classic kneeling stool. Made from recycled materials, the aluminum frame and HDPE seat pans are durable and UV-resistant, perfectly suitable for an outdoor environment.
The new seats allow children and adults alike to discover new sitting postures. The rocking ability also serves as an impetus to play within the courtyard area of the amphitheater.
Additionally, their lightweight design encourage anyone to pick one up and arrange their seat however they want, aiding in social interactions and making it easier for museum staff to set up event seating.
